Chocolate Crinkles

What you need:

1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

75 g semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tbsp vanilla extract

2 pcs eggs

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Equipment and Supplies:

oven (you'll need help from an adult assistant)

large bowl
electric mixer

grater — a plastic grater is safest for kids

cling wrap

measuring cups and spoons
waxpaper

baking tray

What to do:

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter using an electric mixer.

Add-in granulated sugar and continue mixing for 2 minutes.

Add-in cocoa powder and melted chocolate, then mix again for a minute.

Crack-in the eggs; add the vanilla extract then continue mixing until the texture becomes fluffy.

Add-in the flour, salt, and baking powder then mix again until all the ingredients are well combined.

Cover the mixing bowl with cling wrap, and refrigerate for at least 5 hours.

Preheat the oven to 175ºC.

Wash your hands and wipe them dry.

Scoop the chocolate mixture with a 1/2 tbsp measuring spoon.

Using your palms, roll and shape the mixture into a ball.

Then roll the chocolate balls over powdered sugar until fully covered.

Arrange 2~3 inches apart each other on a baking tray lined with wax paper.

Bake in the preheated oven for 10~12 minutes.

Remove from oven (with help from your adult assistant) and  allow to cool down.

Arrange in a platter before serving.

Serve and Enjoy!

Chocolate Cream Cheese Cupcakes


What you need:

Batter:

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 cup cocoa

1 cup water

1/2 cup canola oil

1 tbsp rice vinegar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Filling:

1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened

1 medium egg

1/2 tsp salt

1/3 cup white sugar

1 cup mini chocolate chips

Equipment and Supplies:

oven (you'll need help from an adult assistant)

bowls — large bowl & medium bowl

beater or electric mixer

measuring cups and spoons

muffin tin and paper liners

What to do:

To make the Filling:

In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, egg, sugar, and salt until smooth.

Stir in chocolate chips, and set aside.

To make the Batter:

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and cocoa.

Then, add-in the water, canola oil, rice vinegar, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

Preheat the oven to 175ºC.

Line a cupcake tin with paper liners.

Fill each cup about 1/2 full; and add one heaping tablespoon of filling into the center.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25~30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cupcake comes out clean.

Remove from oven (with help from your adult assistant), and let cool in tin for 20 minutes before removing cupcakes to wire racks to cool completely.

흥부와 놀부 (Heungbu and Nolbu)

흥부와 놀부 (Heungbu and Nolbu)

Heungbu and Nolbu are brothers. Nolbu, the older, is a mean nasty man, greedy and vicious, but very rich. Heungbu, the younger, was a hard worker, kind and generous, but poor and he, his wife and children were always hungry.

One day when Heungbu returns home from work, he finds a snake devouring a nest full of swallows. Only one swallow escapes being killed, but it’s leg was injured in the fall from the nest. Heungbu takes care of the little bird’s leg, covering it with ointment and then wrapping it. The swallow heals and flies south in winter.
The following spring, however it returns to Heungbo’s and drops a gourd seed on the ground. Heungbo of course plants the seed.

Soon the plant grows and produces five unusually large gourds. Heungbu and his wife cut them open. The first is filled with rice, more than enough to fill five large containers. The second is full of gold. The third holds a beautiful nymph who calls bottels out of the remaining. The first bottle holds carpenters the second timer and soon Heungbu and his family have a huge new home. Then the nymph and carpenters disappear, leaving behind the home, gold and rice.

After that, Heungbu became a man of wealth. He and his family lived happily and wanted for nothing. However, when his elder brother Nolbu heard the news, he came immediately to Heungbu’s house. He demanded to be told how his younger brother had managed to become so rich in such a short span of time.

“Hey, you! How on earth did you do it? It’s a miracle. Tell me now how you did it.” Heungbu told him all about the injured swallow and what had happened afterwards.

Nolbu, evil man that he is, thinks he can do the same thing, so he breaks a swallow’s leg in order to fix it. Just like his brother’s swallow, this one flew away in winter and returns in the spring with a gourd seed. When the gourds grew, Nolbu wasted no time cutting one open. However, out came a batch of little imps wielding sticks.

“We must punish you for your greed,” they said and beat him mercilessly then disappeared. Nolbu is still hoping for gold but out of the next gourd comes some debt collectors.    

“Give us money. Repay your loans or else we will take everything from you.”  They took everything and left. Nolbu hasn’t learned yet, and opens the third gourd, out of which pours dirty, smelly water, flooding the house.

Nolbu is desperate and runs to his brother’s house. Heungbu, taking pity on his brother greets him warmly.

Nolbu reflects on what a horrible person he had been, feels sorry, and changes his ways. Then Heungbu splits his fortune equally with Nolbu and they both live happily ever after.

There was once a small and sleepy village, surrounded by mountains on all sides.

A tiger lived on the mountain behind the village. Whenever he climbed to the top of the mountain and roared, the people in the village trembled with fright.

On a winter night, when all the world seemed to be covered with snow, the tiger climbed down. He had not eaten for several days and was very, very, very hungry.

As he was desperately looking for food, he came near the window of a house. A lamp was flickering inside.

Suddenly a baby began crying loudly-"ang, ang, ang." He cried continuously.

Just as the tiger, looking around carefully, was about to enter the house, he heard the voice of a woman, "Keep quiet. The bear is just outside the window."

But the baby, paying no heed to the mother's threats, continued crying.

Crouching down below the window of the house, the tiger thought, "That's a strange baby, I wonder what he looks like. He does not fear a fox or even a bear."

Feeling very hungry again, the tiger stood up. The baby was still crying.

"Oh, look look…" came the mother's voice, "here comes a tiger! He's there, just under the window…"

But the baby continued crying.

The tiger was so shocked and frightened that he collapsed on the ground and almost fainted.

"How on earth does she know that I am here?" The tiger muttered to himself.

Taking a breath after a while, the tiger peeped into the room again.

The baby was still crying. He did not show any sign of being afraid of a tiger, either.

The tiger had never seen a living being which did not fear him. He had always thought that all the thought that all the creatures of the world could not but tremble at the very mention of his name. But this strange baby did not care. Nothing seemed to put fear into him, even a tiger!

Now, the tiger began to feel worried. At that very moment, the mother's voice was heard again, "Now, keep quiet. Here you are… dried persimmons!" The baby stopped crying at once. There was complete silence. Not even the sound of breathing was heard. The tiger wondered, "Who the deuce is Persimmons? He must be more powerful and ferocious than me." The tiger was both worried and scared.

Just then something heavy fell on his back with a thud. The tiger ran for his life, sure that what had jumped on his back was none other than the dreaded persimmon.

Actually, what had jumped on his back was a thief who had entered the house to steal the cattle. He had jumped from the roof, mistaking the tiger for a cow in the dark.

The thief was taken aback too. He was scared to death when he realized that the animal he was riding was not a cow, but a tiger.

The tiger ran desperately to throw the 'persimmon' off his back. But the thief held on tightly to the tiger's back, as he knew that the moment he fell, the tiger would tear him to pieces.

Scared for their lives, both kept running until dawn broke, Luckily, the thief found a drooping branch of a tree within his reach. He seized it, climbed up, and hid himself among the branches. He had at last escaped from the tiger's back, to his great relief.

The tiger was relieved, too. "Thank God," said he, "for saving my life. the persimmon is really a terrible creature."

He ran back to his safe abode in the mountains.
